A lovely 12” Madame Alexander Little Women - Marme doll with the slender Nancy Drew face, ca. 1976, from Snowdrift Antiques.
The Alexander Doll Company was founded in 1923 by Beatrice Alexander, aka Madame Alexander, and is still in operation today in New York, NY USA. The 12” Little Women dolls from late 1960s and on have the slender Nancy Drew face.
This is a very pretty 12” Madame Alexander doll is Marme from the Little Women series using the Nancy Drew slender face with large eyes. She has blue-grey sleep eyes with molded lashes that open and shut with ease. Her dark brown rooted hair is pulled to the back of her neck and held in place with netting; there are some fly-aways. Her face has lovely painted features, I found no marks or rubs on it. She has that slightly quizzical Madame Alexander Nancy Drew face with large, expressive eyes.
She is a strung plastic doll with a socket head, and jointed arms and straight legs. There is no mark on her back, the mark on the back of her neck reads: ALEXANDER 19©76. She has been restrung with elastic which should last longer than the original rubber bands.
Her burgundy cotton dress has a white cotton collar and sleeve hems; there is a row of gathered lace down the front of her bodice. She has a white cotton embroidered apron that ties in back; there is a small age discoloration spot on the right side up in the gathers on the right side, see images 8 & 9. There is a gold tone and faux pearl “jewel” attached at the neck in front. The dress is tagged in back with a label that reads: Louisa M. Alcott’s / Little Women / “MARME” / By Madame Alexander, NY USA / All Rights Reserved. The dress closes with three snaps in back. The outfit is clean and crisp, looks like she was never played with.
On her head she sports a white cotton cap with lace trim and a black bow in front. The gold elastic used to hold the cap on her head was loose so a few stitches were added to tighten it up.
Her under garments consist of white cotton pantaloons with lace trim at the hems and a white cotton underskirt with lace trim at the hem and a sewn -on netting ruffle to hold the dress out. The elastic at the waist of the pantaloons and underskirt were stretched so a few stitches were sewn to tighten them up. She wears white nylon socks and black faux suede Mary Jane shoes that snap closed.
She retains her original wrist tag tied to her left wrist.
