Antique GEISHA DOLL on WOOD BASE with SAMISEN JAPANESE INSTRUMENT WEARING SILK BROCADE KIMONO in APRICOT and IVORY w GOLDEN THREAD This extraordinary antique Japanese Geisha Doll is just shy of 80 years old Standing approx. 17" tall, not counting the black wood base, she appears ready to perform on the samisen three-stringed instrument that hangs from the side of her traditional dress. Designed to be a collectible and not a plaything, the doll features fabric skin , and the costume comes complete with an intricate handmade straw hat with orange ties that are gathered around her neck. As indicated in one of the photos, this was made by the Nishi Doll Company whose logo is on the bottom. Produced in Japan since the 18th century, these dolls were made expressly to represent various activities and aspects of daily Japanese life. According to an article in the Times Picayune newspaper, Geisha dolls commonly featured trademark hairstyles meant to capture the exotic appearance of real Japanese geisha girls who flourished during this era.
