VINTAGE - MATTEL - BARBIE AND KEN GREAT SHAPE WORKOUT FITNESS SERIES DOLLS - WITH ORIGINAL CLOTHING, SHOES AND ACCESSORIES - COPYRIGHT STAMPED 1966, 1968, on each doll. 1983? - Possibly on Ken’s Head (difficult to read stamp) - MADE IN HONG KONG
CONDITION: USED - Vintage in Great Condition!
These are NOT the 1980’s Body Styles, nor the 1983 copyright stamps, which were placed on the dolls’ lower back. They seem to be earlier versions of the Great Shape Workout/Fitness Barbie and Ken. They have the same faces and clothing as the 1980’s versions, but researching online does not show the same body type/copyright stamps. The 1980’s version dolls were made in the Philippines, and seemed to be different in the waist/torso construction, especially on Ken, with that area being able to swivel/rotate on the newer/1980’s dolls. The 1980’s dolls also carried the copyright stamp on their lower back torso. The copyright stamp for these dolls are on their bottoms. Please see photos, and use the zoom feature for details.
Their legs are fully pose-able/bendable. Their bodies do have some very slight cosmetic imperfections, due to dolls of this age, but nothing concerning.
These dolls were purchased together from an elderly lady’s estate. She was not a Barbie Collector in general. They were dressed in their original clothing, shoes and accessories.
They are being sold in “as found” condition.
Ken’s original shoes are stamped inside with “Hong Kong”, as is the stamp on his rear/buttocks, along with the 1968 Mattel copyright signature. His original clothing has an older style snap closure sewn in (as opposed to newer Velcro styles), on his striped shirt. The pants have lost some stretch in the waistband due to age and there is some slight imperfections in his clothing, but still in overall acceptable appearance for this age.
There is a copyright on the back of Ken’s neck that is difficult to read. I know Mattel often used newer molded style heads, with older body styles in their factory assemblies. If so and this set was in fact released in the 1980’s, it would have possibly been the first released lot run, before they switched to the newer made body styles/versions, manufactured later in the Philippines, for the Great Shape doll line. Ken is a brunette, not blonde, like some of the 1980’s and newer versions of the Great Shape Ken dolls.
Barbie’s hair is a bit messy in the back/ends, but the front is still very neat and looks untouched. The original jumpsuit/bodysuit she is dressed in has some slight discoloration, but still in great shape overall. The pink tie belt and striped leg warmers are in great shape, as are her pink shoes. There is also a blue duffel bag included that is in very good condition.
10 pieces total: Barbie doll, Ken doll, 1 pair Ken pants, 1 Ken shirt, 1 pair Ken white sneakers, 1 Barbie leotard/jumpsuit, 1 pink belt, 1 pair striped leg warmers, 1 pair workout/pointe shoes, and 1 duffel bag.
I had Barbies as a child, and my daughters played with Barbies, but I am not a collector. I am not knowledgeable about Barbies, but will answer any questions you may have, based on what I can visually see about this set. They do seem to be the older, vintage style, Barbies, not the newer cheaply made type Barbie doll bodies.
I am not a Barbie expert, so possibly someone with more knowledge can explain the older copyrights.
I do not note any major issues with either doll. They seem to be played with very little, if at all and are in overall very good vintage condition.
They may show gentle wear, or have slight flaws, commensurate of collectible pieces of this age.

**Items are stored and shipped from my clean, non-smoking, and pet free, home. However, I do have scented candles, and other fragrances, in my house. Some of my used clothing items may also smell like scented detergent and/or fabric softener. Some New With Tags items may have absorbed “good/clean” scents, from being stored in my clean home. If tags are intact, the clothing IS still new, and unworn! Any scents in clothing, should be easily removed with laundering. I do NOT buy, or sell, items with strong cigarette smoke odors, as I have found it can be nearly impossible, to completely remove those odors, especially from fabric.
However, I do not always know the history of some vintage items I sell! Therefore, if you are super-sensitive to scents, or allergic, please DO NOT bid, or buy, as I cannot always guarantee “100% scent free” items. I will not accept returns based on scents.
